History of
Lawrence County
| Lawrence County was formed on January 16, 1821 from the counties of Crawford and Edwards. The county was named after Captain James Lawrence, who was mortally wounded in an engagement between his ship, the Chesapeake, and the British vessel, Shannon, during the War of 1812. His memorable last words were "Don't give up the ship!" Lawrence County was the 20th county formed in Illinois. Early settlers came mainly from the Southern States, with many coming from Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. |
